Purpose of Post

The National Academy for Educational Leadership (Leadership Academy) was established in May 2018 as an arm’s length organisation, separate from Welsh Government.

The Leadership Academy is responsible for the strategic oversight and direction of leadership provision to meet the needs of the education system within Wales. It has a key role in ensuring equity of access to high-quality leadership development by endorsing a range of leadership provision for all levels of educational leadership and commissioning provision where gaps are identified. The Leadership Academy has also developed an endorsement model for leadership provision and is building capacity in the system through its academy associates. It feeds into strategic workforce planning for leadership and acts as a conduit and focus for policy thinking, evidence gathering and research dissemination in regard to educational leadership.

The Leadership Academy is seeking to recruit a Communications Manager to support the senior leadership team to widen and deepen engagement with our work in Wales. The post holder will help ensure the Leadership Academy is more visible to the profession and that its ‘offer’ to leaders is clearly understood and effectively accessed. The post holder will bring a strategic focus to our communications work, a refreshed and enhanced approach to digital engagement, a coherent suite of events and written materials and new approaches to media engagement and public affairs.

The Communications Manager will report to the Head of Operations.

Key Tasks

The Communications Manager will:

Lead our Communications Strategy
• Develop and implement a comprehensive Communications Strategy for the Leadership Academy, working closely with the CEO and senior team and supporting work across our strategic priority areas.

Build our digital presence
• Be responsible for the design and content of the Leadership Academy’s website, establishing it, with our social media channels, as an effective platform for Leadership Academy messaging, information-sharing and promotion.
• Work towards the development of an effective online portal for educational leaders in Wales to interact meaningful with the Leadership Academy as a virtual community.
• Lead on internal communications, including developing our existing internal digital structures to support our Leadership Academy Associates.

Extend the reach and impact of our (digital) marketing, information sharing and campaigns
• Manage the Leadership Academy’s social media platforms, creating and publishing content and maintaining a schedule of communications
• Produce and disseminate the Leadership Academy bulletin
• Produce content for inclusion in partner agencies’ newsletters and publications
• Assist the senior leadership team in planning and organising all Leadership Academy events, include those organised jointly with our strategic partners
• Represent the Leadership Academy at events
• Format and laying out of flyers, leaflets, brochures and other collateral
• Work closely with the Assistant Director for Policy, Research and Strategic Workforce Planning to ensure research and policy publication reach the widest and most influential audience.
• Work with Leadership Academy associates to generate authentic, ‘voice of the profession’ content for dissemination across our channels.

Support our stakeholder management
• Attend stakeholder meetings
• Attend communication strategy meetings with Welsh Government and partner agency representatives
• Work with Welsh Government and partner agencies to develop coherent and collaborative communications

Build our media and public affairs engagement
• Working with our specialist media consultants, develop relationships with education print and broadcast journalists and relevant media organisations (including professional and industry publications) to ensure that Leadership Academy policy-influencing and promotional work receives positive and extensive coverage in Wales. This will include, securing opportunities for senior staff to contribute Op Ed pieces, creation of press releases etc.
• Support the senior Leadership Academy team to develop positive relationships with key government and political stakeholders

Key skills
• Educated to degree level in a relevant subject
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Literate in range of software including MS Office and Adobe suite
• Experience of using digital marketing platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Hootsuite, Wordpress
• Positive and enthusiastic
• Excellent attention to detail
• Experience of dealing with a wide range of stakeholders
• An understanding of media and public affairs engagement
• Able to produce content for a range of different contexts and formats
• Willing to show initiative
• Thorough and methodical approach to work.
